Determining that a diamond's proportioning is good can play a huge factor in a diamond's overall beauty. Observe very closely the section of the diamonds grading report that refers to depth percentage and table percentage. The depth percentage reveals the actual depth of diamonds. The distance from the table to the culet represents the percentage of width of the diamond. These numbers will represent the quality of a round diamond and how it has been cut in reference to it’s proportioning, and must conform to very exact standards. Although, you may be able to see the differences in the sparkle and brilliance of diamonds, you probably will not be able to notice the difference in proportioning of diamonds. There are percentages that determine if diamonds are classified or judged poor, excellent, or acceptable. Many diamond-grading reports provide you knowledge with information on the crown angle. The crown angle will give you the information you need to determine how the crown portion has been cut. This cut will directly affect the table percentage and depth. Typically, the table depth will be considered excellent if the crown angle is between 34 and 36 degrees, 32 - 34 are considered good, 30- 32 are considered fair, and anything less than 30 degrees is considered poor. It is probably considered acceptable if the crown angle is not given. If the crown angle is considered unacceptable in diamonds, then there is typically a statement identifying that the crown angle exceeds 36 degrees, or is less than 30 degrees.
