Real Diamonds Become Cheap Diamonds

When people see things that seem to good to be true, they often don"t believe it. For example, when hearing that one can have diamonds for next to nothing, most believe that the diamonds are either extremely cheap diamonds, or simply fake diamonds. Unfortunately, for one jewelry-store owner in the Netherlands a few years ago, many mistook his good diamonds for cheap diamonds and fakes.

According to an article on the BBC website, in a rather questionable promotional effort, a Dutch jeweler, Johan de Boer, sent out a number of envelopes to clients, containing either fake, cheap diamonds or real diamonds. The real diamonds were only contained within 200 of the envelopes, with the rest of the mailings containing the fake, cheap diamonds. The goal of the mailings was that most clients would not be able to distinguish between the fake, cheap diamonds, and the real thing. The client would then discover that according to the attached offer, she/he could bring the item down to the shop to discover if it was real or if they were fake, cheap diamonds. As the client could keep the real diamonds, this afforded the incentive to all who received either the real or the fake, cheap diamonds to visit the jeweler.

Ah, but the jeweler had overlooked the very idea we discussed at the beginning. Apparently, only 35 of the clients who received the real diamonds brought them in. The majority of the recipients had thrown the envelopes away, most unopened, believing them to be fake, cheap diamonds

There were many in that Dutch town who found themselves sifting through their garbage, hoping to find not simply fake, cheap diamonds, but a real diamond in the rough.
