Diamond Grading

Diamonds are very unique in that each and every diamond in existence is different. Through the course of nature, diamonds are formed through intense heat and pressure well below the Earth’s surface. The diamonds that have been found are millions and even billions of years old and have reached the surface through kimberlite pipes. These kimberlite pipes are volcanic in nature and are rock that has erupted to the surface carrying many different elements including diamonds. The importance of these kimberlite pipes cannot be stressed enough as these pipes allow us to see a sampling of the many different minerals that exist way below the surface. Diamonds that are found in these pipes are used as gemstones in jewelry or for industrial use.

When a diamond is used in jewelry, it must be analyzed and graded to determine its price. There are independent laboratories that are qualified to examine and grade diamonds and employ many professionals that have training and hands-on experience with the many types of diamonds. These professionals grade the diamonds using the four C"s, which are a diamonds cut, carat weight, clarity, and color. Both color and cut weigh heavier on the outcome than the other two, but all four are evaluated to determine a stone"s value. The results of the analyzation of the diamond are noted on a certificate that must accompany the diamond on its way to the retail market. This grading report helps both retailers and consumers by taking away the misrepresentation that sometimes occurs with these items.
