Diamond Sources
Historically, diamonds were found in India, in alluvial deposits situated in the southern area of that country . India led the world in diamond production for many thousands of years, between 9th century BC and mid-18th century AD. That supply has since been exhausted, and remained that way for some time. The first non-Indian source that was discovered was in the South American country of Brazil around 1725. In this day and age, most commercially viable diamond deposits are in Africa, mostly in the south, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone. There are also some mines in the north of Canada, Siberia, Brazil, and in Northern and Western Australia. All famous diamonds of any note were Indian diamonds and include the Great Mogul, the Orlov, the Koh-i-noor, and the Regent . Other famous diamonds found in this area are the Hope, Dresden, and Tiffany. In the early 18th century, alluvial deposits similar to those found in India were found in Brazil. In 1867, a diamond was found in South Africa, the first of its kind. Within a few years, this began a crazy, intense search for diamonds, both in river dredging and inland searches. Most of the diamonds mined in the current age were found in Africa and have been exported all over the world. Unfortunately, some of the diamonds found in Africa have been used to fund rebel groups who fueled civil strife for many years. These "blood" diamonds have been a great source of controversy throughout the world.
