Diamonds And Fame

There is one thing that most celebrity functions have in common. At each and every one of these events the shine of diamonds is certain to be seen. Both women and men are seen sporting the shimmering brilliance that is a diamond. For some, diamonds are worn as a subtle highlight, such as with diamond cuff links, or small diamond stud earrings. For other celebrities, diamonds seem to be almost covering entire portions of their bodies, such as with elaborate diamond tiaras or large diamond bangles and necklaces. Regardless of the quantity of diamonds, it is clear that the true shining stars are the celebrities themselves. Yet there are diamonds in the world that retain a greater celebrity than the rich and famous.

Diamonds have engaged the fascination of humans for thousands of years now. The shine and allure of this crown jewel of jewels has brought immense attraction and great desire. Some diamonds have proven to hold such a profound allure that men have been willing to fight and kill for the right to bear them. Many of the most famous and timeless diamonds such as these have come out the of the Golcanda mines.

The Golcanda mines of India have produced some of the most famous diamonds in the world. For centuries, these mines have produced diamonds that have traveled around the world, century after century, plundered again and again by one army after another. The Golcanda mines are some of the oldest mines in the world and have produced diamonds whose fame has outlasted most of those who held and cherished them.

One such diamond is the Darya-ye Noor. This enormous diamond is one of the largest diamonds in the world, weighing in at an astounding 182 carats. Unlike the modern, common aesthetic of the clear, colorless diamond, the Darya-ye Noor is a pale pink, as the Golcanda mines were known for their production of pink diamonds. The actual name, Darya-ye Noor was given to it for its tremendous light display. It actually translates to “Sea of Light” and the name was not misplaced.

The diamond Darya-ye Noor has been known to be around since at least 1739, but its history as a distinct diamond can probably be traced back at least another hundred years. Most of the people who owned the Darya-ye Noor diamond have been long since forgotten by most people, and are, at best, relegated to a brief footnote in the history of the diamond itself. So the next time you watch celebrities walking down a red carpet, remember that while the diamonds that they wear are complementing them today, it may be the celebrities who complement the history of the diamonds themselves tomorrow.
