Diamond Colors

It is a common misconception that all diamonds are clear, or colorless, but diamonds naturally occur in a range of colors, but the most common is the pure colorless diamond. Colored diamonds have color because of structural defects within the stone that will allow the stone to absorb all but one color of the rainbow. Even though it is a flaw that gives diamonds their color, they will cost more than a colorless diamond because they are so rare.

Diamonds can occur in a variety of colors including: colorless, white, yellow, steel, blue, orange, green, pink, brown, and black. Any diamond that has color to it is referred to as a colored diamond, but if the color is very chromatic, it will be referred to as a fancy colored diamond. By far, the most common colored diamond is the yellow diamond and the rarest is a red diamond.

The color of a diamond is one of the classifications used to determine the value of a diamond. The color classification uses an alphabet scale. A colorless to white diamond is classified as a letter ranging from D-I. A near colorless diamond will be given a letter J-L. Yellow diamonds are also given letter classifications with a faint yellow diamond being an M, a light yellow diamond being N-R and the darker yellow diamonds are given S-Z. Any of the other colors of diamonds will be called by their color, for example blue diamonds or green diamonds.

If you want to give your jewelry box a splash of color, you might consider purchasing some colored diamond jewelry.
