The Engagement Ring and its Focusing Power

The engagement ring is a powerful symbol in our culture. The very nature of the engagement ring, its shape and attendant social bond, is merely the beginning to the power that has been imbued within it for most people. While this may be obvious to many, it is one thing to be aware of how powerful a symbol the engagement ring is and another to see actual examples of the power of the engagement ring. A recent news article from the BBC radio, 4 program, Home Truths, may help to illustrate the symbolic meaning that is placed within the engagement ring.

Tara and Frede Spencer had been walking home through a London park, the couple carrying their engagement ring as they were taking it for refitting. During their walk they became embroiled in an argument. At one point, Tara demanded that Frede throw her the engagement ring, as she didn't want it anymore. Upon catching the engagement ring, Tara took it and threw it into the lake that they were passing by. This shocking action actually helped diffuse their argument, and refocus their affection for one another. The centerpiece of their argument quickly dissolved into the engagement ring, rather than on whatever they had been arguing about. Neither quite recalls what the argument was over, or how it exactly began, but they both agreed that the engagement ring became the center of the entire incident.

Fortunately for them, they were able to reconcile that afternoon and purchased another engagement ring. The original engagement ring was lost to the lake, despite Frede's disrobing immediately and leaping in after it, even in the icy-cold London-in-November climate. Incidentally, the original engagement ring was found shortly afterwards when divers, searching the pond during a murder investigation, found the engagement ring at the bottom of the lake.
