Diamonds From Liberia
For approximately six years Liberia has been banned from exporting diamonds. Recently this ban was lifted, but it may be a while until diamonds are seen in the diamond industry from Liberia. Before mining can even begin, testing has to be done for kimberlite which in return will decide where diamonds should be mined from. There is simply no way to know what kind of diamonds are going to come out of Liberia, but with all of the un-mined land, many are rushing to apply for mining jobs. Currently, areas of Liberia are under the "box stage" which is where mining companies test certain areas of land for kimberlite to try and determine if those areas are good to mine or not.
The process of testing and mining for diamonds takes quite some time and with Liberia currently being accepted back into the diamond industry due to the fact that the U.N. believes that they meet the requirements of the Kimberely Process, it may take a little longer for diamonds to hit the market from Liberia than from any other diamond mining countries. The reason behind this is that the diamonds that are mined from Liberia are going to go through a more rigorous process since there are numerous government agencies set up to make sure that the diamonds that are mined from Liberia are done so in a "legal" way. The upcoming months and years will prove to show if Liberia can remain in the good graces of the Kimberely Process and add their diamonds to the worldwide diamond industry.
