Diamonds Fund Health Care Development
For many years, diamonds have funded and continue to fund public health care programs. Africa is the perfect example of how the diamond industry contributes to healthcare. Africa leads the world in child death rates and no other country has been more affected by the AIDS virus. A study taken place in 2005 showed that approximately 24.5 million people had the HIV virus in Africa and 2.7 million had new infections in the last year alone. This created a whole new problem for the already under funded health care system in Africa. Millions of children, some with HIV infections, are often left as orphans.
The funding from the diamond industry has helped Africa deal with their HIV crisis. Several diamond companies offer AIDS treatment and medical coverage to its employees. In Namibia, there are diamond companies that have contributed to the public sector in creating workplaces for HIV programs. Workplaces can offer counseling and testing in effort to control the HIV virus. The diamond industry helps fund the Ministry of Health and Social Services who provide HIV awareness programs. The education that is offered is extremely important to controlling HIV in Africa.
Revenues from the diamond industry are also responsible for contributing to other diseases such as polio. Clean water, accessible faculties, and low-cost healthcare are all contributions the diamond industry provides. This has helped Africa lower its infection rates and extend life expectancy.
The diamond industry continues to be an important contributor to several different countries around the world. It is estimated that 5 million people have appropriate health care available to them thanks to the revenue from diamonds.
