Diamond Jewelry and the East

Before medicine became as analytical as it is today, many medical practitioners relied on more esoteric knowledge of the energetic body. For instance, each finger on either hand was associated with the magical elements of fire, water, earth, ether, and air. For people who studied the energetic body system of the East, the finger where we place the marriage ring was associated with water and the qualities of feeling and emotion. Back then, people wore jewelry, even diamond jewelry, not just because it looked pretty, it was meant to increase health and vitality in specific non-physical areas of the psyche as well. Thus, to them, it made great sense that the diamond engagement ring was placed on the left hand on the fourth finger of the hand and nowhere else.

Diamond jewelry was perceived to hold magical qualities that protected the bearer and enhanced sexuality and passion. The placement of the jewelry on the body was done to help specialize those qualities in a particular area in that person’s life. Therefore diamonds on breastplates were worn for protection in battle. A diamond pendant is particularly powerful in that the heart is said to contain the seat of consciousness. The diamond itself in the diamond jewelry was said to amplify the intentions of the bearer, whether for positive or negative intentions.

While we no longer subscribe to many of the belief systems of the past, many people still recognize the power of diamond jewelry and equate it to strong feelings, desire, and love. Whether one gives or receives diamond jewelry, the symbolisms speak loud and clear even knowing nothing about the energetic medical systems of the East.
