The Art Deco Period
Between 1920 and 1935, the age of the flappers and Jazz, a new style of jewelry came into the scene: Art Deco. Prior to this period, jewelry and engagement rings had been about understated pieces of jewelry with soft colors and flowing lines. When women started to cut their hair short, the jewelry became angular too with bright, strong colors. Sparkling green emeralds, brilliant pink and blue sapphires and radiant rubies were paired with diamonds in large cocktail rings, even the engagement rings too.As jewelry began to get a more modern look to it, motifs became more playful with the addition of decorations with the Egyptian sphinx or falcons. The jewelry was typically ostentatious and made to be shown, from the large cocktail rings of the time to the ornate watches. Today, art deco jewelry is highly valued for collectors but it has to be verified to come from that period to be considered true art deco jewelry. One can still buy modern jewelry in the art deco style, but it would not be considered authentically art deco unless it was created between 1920 and 1935. Instead, it would be considered to follow an Art Deco style. Engagement rings created during this time are also becoming increasingly popular due to their use of colored gemstones such as pink sapphires, emeralds and rubies.
The Art Deco style is one that anyone can adopt within the modern lifestyle and continues to be popular. One can choose from Art Deco inspired engagement rings and think one is going modern instead of antique. The modern style of jewelry has a lot to be thankful for from the Art Deco period. Although the jewelry tends to be much more ornate than newer modern styles, the straight lines and bold statement this style makes easily blends into the modern style.
