Non Diamond Engagement Rings
There are many options available today to the couple that is looking for engagement rings. While diamond engagement rings are still the most popular, some couples are looking into non diamond engagement rings. Non diamond engagement rings are a broad category, and include non iamond engagement rings ideas such as fake diamonds, sapphires and emeralds, to name but a few.A popular choice of non diamond engagement rings is the fake diamond category. There are two current fake diamond types used in non diamond engagement rings these days: cubic zirconia and Moissanite. The cubic zirconia is one of the oldest and most popularly known of the fake diamonds, and are often used in non diamond engagement rings.Cubic zirconia, or zirconium oxide (ZrO2) was first discovered in 1932 and began to be used as fake diamonds in non diamond engagement rings by 1976.While these do function quite well for casual viewing as non diamond engagement rings, and they are much less expensive than diamonds, there are setbacks. The primary one of these setbacks is that cubic zirconia do not, and due to the chemical make up of the cubic zirconia, cannot, reflect and refract light in the same manner that diamonds do.
Mossinites are newcomers on the block of faux diamonds and are being seen more frequently than cubic zirconia for use in non diamond engagement rings.Mossinites are quite beautiful faux gems, and are much closer to real diamonds than cubic zirconia.Chemically known as silicon carbide, Mossinite as used for non diamond engagement rings is more expensive than cubic zirconia, but disperses light more effectively than cubic zirconia. The main problem with Mossinite when used as for non diamond engagement rings, aside from experts being able to quickly notice them as fakes, is that Mossinite does not have the natural whiteness, or clarity that diamonds do.
