Large Diamonds Remain High In Demand as Diamond Costs Rise
It was back in the 70’s that a half carat diamond was considered a large diamond, but in today’s day in age more people are veering towards diamonds that are not only high in carat weight, but also with an excellent color grade. The proof that consumers are willing to pay high dollar amounts in high carat weight flawless diamonds was seen in the pudding at a recent auction in South Africa at Johannesburg diamond bourse where a 26.60 D colored rough diamond sold for a mere $55,000 dollars per carat which gave the rough diamond a total sale price of $1,463 million dollars. The rough diamond of 26.60 carats was mined at the Alexhor Mine which is just one of the many diamonds that are sold via auction or enter the diamond market from South Africa. South Africa is the fourth leading contributor to the World's diamond market with the Alexhor Mine contributing 120,000 carats per year to the World diamond market.
There were many bids on the 26.60 diamond when the auction was held place in Johannesburg diamond bourse and with utility problems rocking South Africa at the time of the auction the bidding began slowly at $40,000 but steadily rose to $55,000 per carat at which it sold. It is reported that the high price per carat that the diamond received is just the beginning of rising costs in not only the diamond industry, but the gold and platinum industry as well.
