How to Read a Diamond Grading Report
There is no doubt about it, diamond-grading reports are very important but they can also be dangerous if you do not understand them and lead to costly mistakes. The major factor of a diamond report is to understand the information so you can have confidence in your decision to purchase that diamond. There are many different diamond grading laboratories that all have their own diamond grading report. It’s important to look for a grading report from a highly respected diamond grading laboratory. Some of the most well known laboratories are GIA, EGL, and AGS. While a grading report from any of these laboratories will increase the value of your diamonds significantly, for many in the diamond industry GIA is the leading diamond grading laboratory.
Many people will narrow their diamond search down to a couple of diamonds and rely on the diamond grading reports to assist them in their final decision. They will look specifically at the clarity and color that the report displays and decide on which diamond to purchase solely on that. This is not a good practice. Color and clarity should not be the only factor in your decision. In reality, when price differences exist between two diamonds it is usually because the less expensive diamond is not the same quality, even though the color and clarity are the same.
Clarity and color only offer a portion of the total picture and differences in price usually exist because of the quality that you may or may not see. Round diamonds, for example will have everything you need on the diamond grading report but that does not necessarily mean you understand it. It is important to understand the information so you can make a good quality comparison between the two diamonds.
At first reading and understanding diamond grading reports can seem complicated but after some experience you can quickly fell like a professional. Do not hesitate to seek help from the jeweler or a friend that is familiar with the report's, you will be stunned by how many differences you will start to notice in diamonds.
