The history of diamonds

"Diamonds", the word itself describes beauty and splendor. The word diamond was taken from the Greek word "Adamas", which meant invincible and indestructible. The history of diamonds is as interesting as its name! For thousands of years it has attracted kings, queens, pirates and all natives towards its mesmerizing beauty and value. Diamond has been the source for prosperity, power, love, courage and magical powers. In the past, diamonds were considered as tears drops of the almighty god with magical powers in it; Hence in olden days persons in possession of diamonds were considered powerful and dominant.

The first riverbed diamonds were possibly discovered in India, during 800 B.C. As the history goes, diamonds were mined from sand and gravels around the riverbeds. But in 1870 a diamond was discovered within the earth surface and thus the practice of diamond mining came in to existence. The discovery of diamonds also gave birth to some of the world famous diamonds. Prominent among them is the Star of Africa or Cullinan diamond discovered in South Africa in 1095; it is the largest diamond crystal ever found.

The Excelsior diamond is the second largest diamond found in South Africa in 1893 by a mine worker. The Great Mogul is the world’s third largest diamond, named after the Indian emperor Shah Jehan, and it was found in Indian city of Hyderabad. The Kohinoor diamond has its own unique history. It has traveled and been in possession of various emperors, kings and queens. And of course who will forget the Hope diamond named after its buyer Henry Thomas Hope. This diamond had the history and reputation of been the unluckiest diamond for its owners.

Even now diamonds have the same eminence as it had in past. Whatever may be the history of diamonds, it has always been one of the most sought and precious stone in the entire world.
