The Round Brilliant Diamond Throughout The Years
The history behind the Round brilliant cut diamond runs almost as deep as the history of diamonds themselves. It was 1200 bc when the diamond cutters began shaping stones and polishing them, and since then there have been some major developments in diamond cutting, especially for the Round brilliant cut diamond. Before there was the Round brilliant cut, there was the mine cut diamond. Do not be surprised if you take a passed down diamond to an appraiser and they tell you that the diamond is a mine cut. Essentially, mine cut diamonds are very similar to Round brilliant cut diamonds with the exception that mine cut diamonds have an extra facet.
During the 17th century, Round brilliants were introduced. Vincent Peruzzi took the Round brilliant diamond that was introduced with 17 facets and increased the facets to 33. Later, during the 1900s when more diamond cutting techniques and tools became available to diamond cutters, Marcel Tolkowsky took advantage of two factors that he found important in diamonds, brilliance and symmetry, and used these two factors in updating the round brilliant cut diamond; meet the Ideal cut diamond.
The Ideal Cut diamond is a grading that is only available to Round brilliant cut diamonds as well as Princess Cut diamonds. Just like the Round brilliant diamond has seen many improvements over the centuries, the same has been seen with Ideal cut diamonds. Ideal Cut round brilliant diamonds can be found in a style that is referred to as Hearts and Arrows. When the actual diamond is looked down on, the hearts and arrows are seen in the facets. Many prestige jewelers have their own line of Hearts and Arrows diamonds, which has caused quite a stir in those looking for unique diamonds.
