Introduction of the Oval Cut Diamond

The Oval cut diamond is a diamond that is one of the most popular fancy cut diamonds. An adaptation of the Round brilliant cut diamond, the Oval cut diamond holds back no brilliance. Before you can even understand the brilliance and elegance of this diamond cut, you first must know it is history to truly appreciate it.

Lazare Kaplan was a Russian born diamond cutter who as a young teenager moved to Belgium and later as an adult came to America. Lazare Kaplan came from a family of jewelers, especially diamond cutters, but his own particular skill in the business was that of taking the rough diamond and with a single blow splitting the diamond into smaller stones. This act is called cleaving and this is what Lazare Kaplan claim to fame was in the diamond industry.

Lazare Kaplan was prided throughout the industry for his capabilities of taking imperfect diamonds and irregular diamonds and turning them into the most valuable cut diamonds that you can find. With his cleaving, he was so advanced and talented that he could take a diamond that another cutter deemed unworthy because of its imperfections, and expertly remove the diamonds flaws.

It wasn’t until the 1960’s that Lazare Kaplan introduced his own cut, the Oval cut diamond. His eye for detail allowed him the ability to not only create a diamond cut that was breathtaking in design, but also got him inducted to Jewelers International Hall of Fame.

The Oval cut diamond is a choice that is popular in many diamond jewelry pieces that range from engagement rings to pendants. One reason that the Oval cut diamond is loved by so many is because of its beautiful shape and brilliance. Lazare Kaplan worked closely with his uncle Abraham Tolkowsky, the diamond cutter that introduced the Ideal Cut diamond, which may be why this diamond cut is as brilliant and breathtaking as it is.
