The Unique and Elegeant Emerald Cut Diamond

When a diamond is cut using the Emerald cut, the diamond itself has an appearance that is very unique than it would if the diamond was cut using any other diamond shape. The Emerald cut diamond is a popular, yet elegant shape, that is actually derived from how the cutting technique that was used on the Emerald gemstone.

The actual shape of an Emerald cut diamond is rectangular with taped corners. However, what sets this diamond cut apart from other diamond cuts is the “step cut” that is used. A “step cut” is a technique that diamond cutters use where the diamond cuts such as the Emerald cut diamond and the Asscher cut diamond, feature broad plans that feature large facets. A brilliant cut diamond, such as the Round Brilliant and the Princess cut diamond, have approximately 58-59 facets; whereas; the Emerald cut diamond has around 7-11 facets.

The look that is created with Emerald cut diamonds is of large flashes of brilliance as opposed to a diamond that shimmers with fire. Emerald cut diamonds are very popular for diamond engagement ring center stones and pendants, but not so popular for diamond earrings. The reason why Emerald cut diamond are not a desirable cut for diamond earrings is that it is next to impossible to collaborate to diamonds like you would need to for a pair of matching diamond earrings.

The large facets in Emerald cut diamonds make this a diamond that should be chosen with extreme care because since this cut features very few facets that are large in size, imperfections and bad color will show more prominently. Many jewelers will also recommend a platinum or white gold setting for this diamond since the large facets might reflect yellow gold in a fashion that would no compliment this diamond, or the wearer.
