Liberia Exports Diamonds Under The Kimberley Process

The term "blood diamond" has been the cause of much concern for quite some time now and rightfully so. Blood diamonds have been a major concern to many people both in and out of the diamond industry. In an effort to curb the exportation of illegal diamonds, the Kimberley Process was put in place. Many diamond producing areas, with the exception of Liberia who was banned for six years from exporting diamonds under the Kimberley Process, have complied and now conduct legal diamond trading.

After much ado and plenty of awareness still on the blood diamond situation, Liberia finally joined the rest of the other diamond producing countries and shipped their first exported diamonds under the Kimberley Process.

Liberia has struggled over the years to take the effects of the war that ravaged their country and their people and get things right again. With the ban lifted from exporting diamonds in September and their first mere shipment of $222,000 worth of diamonds, the struggle this country has endured should lessen as more jobs will be available and 3 percent per diamond sales will be given back to the government.

Liberia will only grow more feverously now that they can export diamonds and with high hopes of bringing their troops home in 2008 this country will have another cause for celebration. The diamond industry itself and those that purchase diamonds will also share in the success of Liberia as the blood diamond situation will soon be an issue that is no longer a cause for concern.
