Each gemstone has a range of colors and each color lends a different meaning to each gemstone. Many people forget to take a gemstone’s color into account when offering one as a gift, and this is a missed opportunity. The color of a gemstone offers yet one more means by which to personalize a gemstone, as the mix of the gemstone’s natural attributes and its color meld together to create particular traits.Previously, we’ve named a handful of gemstones, and looked at their various attributes. We’ve seen that each gemstone has a particular personality, and each carries its own traits. Now let’s add to your gem knowledge by looking at how color can add to the traits of each given gemstone. This is by no means a comprehensive look at color, but it will give you an idea of how to take color into account when picking out a gemstone for your loved one.
White, as we’ve learned, is a color of purity and innocence, however, that’s not where it ends. White also offers the traits of cleanliness, balance, perfection and modernity. White stones include diamonds, pearls, topaz, moonstone and quartz.
Red is the color of passion and love, but it holds so much more than that. It is also the color of the outgoing, the achievers, the movers and the shakers. Red is equated with strength, speed, power, blood and leadership. Stones that are found in red include ruby, coral, and garnet.
The color blue is calming and is associated with the sky and the heavens. More than this, though, blue is also the color of sensitivity, wisdom, idealism, tranquility, loyalty and inspiration. Blue stones include sapphires, aquamarine, turquoise and lapis.
Yellow is a color that offers something to children and intellectuals. It is the color of generosity, lightness, and good cheer. It brings along the traits of sunshine, friendship, idealism and trust. This color adds its traits to mix along with the traits of such gems as diamonds, amber and citrine.
As we mentioned earlier, green is the color of nature. Green is, however, also the color of money, justice, fertility and good fortune. Other traits include change, ambition and delight. These are added to the natural characteristics of emerald, jade, and turquoise.
Our last two that we’ll look at are brown and black. Brown’s traits include stability and earthiness. This might not be much of a surprise to most. What it means though, is that brown can add stability to a stone that might otherwise have the traits of passion, such as the garnet. Brown also offers the traits of harmony and wholesomeness. Brown stones include diamond, garnet, tiger’s eye, jasper and agate.
Black is one of the most interesting of colors. It is seen as the opposite of white or clear, as it is seen to absorb all the colors, as opposed to white which reveals all colors. Black has the traits of mystery, self-control, gravity, perseverance and inconspicuousness. The trait of emptiness found in the color black can be seen as the ability to take on anything and bring forth unforeseen traits and abilities. This is seen as the color of rebellion as well as elegance. Black gems include diamond, onyx, obsidian and agate.
Hopefully this look into some of the most commonly found gemstone colors will help you to further your gemstone knowledge. Color isn’t everything, but the meanings that each color can add to a gemstone will give your gem a distinctive appeal. Even if you don’t believe in the powers of colors, adding traits and attributes such as strength, love or passion, this doesn’t take away from the fact that color can add aesthetic appeal to a gem; not to mention that it never hurts to be able to tell that special someone that you chose both the gemstone and the color for the personal traits that fill you with so much love for her.
