It is no secret that when it comes to diamonds, platinum is the most popular choice to use as the precious metal to set these gorgeous stones in. From the elite to the couple getting engaged, platinum is the most popular of all precious metals and its price will even prove that. Platinum is the crème de la crème of precious metals that not only provides a beautiful backdrop in diamond settings, but also is one of the toughest precious metals which has increased its popularity in pieces of jewelry that are available in the jewelry market both today and also in the past styles of jewelry, especially during the Edwardian Era. Although white gold is very similar to platinum in color, platinum is shinier and as stated before, more durable.
From diamond settings to all other types of jewelry, platinum may soon be seeing a drastic change. Like all precious metals, platinum comes from the Earth and it has become so popular throughout time that the resources for gaining this must-have precious metal have become limited. It may not be too much longer until platinum diamond settings and other pieces of platinum jewelry see drastic changes.
The Federal Trade Committee has proposed that instead of platinum jewelry being 85% pure platinum, the standard be lowered to .585. Identifying markers would need to be set in place so that consumers are aware of the amount of platinum that the jewelry they are about to buy contains, and that it isn’t the same percentage of platinum that past pieces of platinum jewelry have featured. This change hasn’t been completely approved yet, but it could very well happen soon.
