Lead in jewelry has been a problem in the past so regulations have been put into place to limit the amount of lead used in products of all kinds. Recently there have been recalls on children’s jewelry from China that contained a dangerous amount of lead. These jewelry designs were pulled from the shelves and the companies that produced them were ultimately reprimanded.
In California, they are always looking out for the consumer and have instituted guidelines that must be followed for lead content. The original bill setting the standard for lead content was passed in 2006, but larger manufacturers and companies were able to avoid paying fines by signing an amended decree. That loophole has been closed, so now all California businesses must follow the guidelines or be penalized.
Over the years, many of the larger companies that signed the decree have racked up violations, but have not been penalized much. The closure of the loophole is good for business and is definitely a win for consumers as they will no longer have to worry about lead in products in the great state of California. Peace of mind reigns and companies are finally going to have to pony up if they choose to ignore the guidelines for safety.
