The world of gold and diamond jewelry has seen some astounding creations. In the past, however, extravagant gold and diamond jewelry pieces were exclusive to an extremely wealthy class of society. While the richest still do wear and display gold jewelry and diamond jewelry the way most of us wear shoes, more and more companies are making it possible for people lower down on the economic ladder to offer their own ostentatious display to the rest of the world.
Essentially what is happening is that the wealthy of today are displaying ever more gold and diamond displays on everyday objects. Such items as cell phones are being covered in gold and encrusted with diamond, allowing the wealthy to display their wealth in something as common as a phone call. This display can even be seen in certain bottled waters, in which the bottle is encrusted in diamond. With the wealthy demonstrating such a level of disregard for any measure of humility, modesty or restraint, it isn’t difficult to understand the growing desire by those of far less means to display a similar level of gold and diamond jewelry.
There are now companies that will cover one’s cell phone in gold plating, while others will encrust a cell phone in a smattering of small diamonds. In addition to this is the entire concept of the “grill”. This is a rather interesting take on jewelry in which a thin, denture-like mouthpiece is slid over an individual’s teeth. The “grill” is typically covered with diamond, and is often made with gold, or made to look like gold. Of course, many of these gold and diamond jewelry items are expensive, but they are not at the expense level of the gold and diamond jewelry pieces that inspired them and which are still exclusive to the rich and famous.
It would seem that almost nothing cannot now be decked out in gold and diamond, and made into an enormous piece of jewelry. Bathing suits are bedecked in gold and diamond, creating a jewelry item out of something that had been created for covering oneself while swimming. Microphones are encrusted with diamond, creating a jewelry item out of a tool used for the recording industry. Jewelry has become so enmeshed into the cult of celebrity and wealth that even jewelers are becoming famous for the clients whom they serve. Some hip hop artists have even mentioned their own jewelers in their songs, bragging of where they have their personal gold and diamond jewelry made.
With so much attention being paid to the wealthy and the famous, it would seem unnecessary for them to bedeck themselves in gold and diamond jewelry. Today’s population is more and more drawn, much like moths to a flame, to diamonds and the ostentatious jewelry of the wealthy and famous. Over-the-top displays of gold and diamond jewelry are met with applause and longing rather than censure and disgust, as people seek out low-cost versions of the gold and diamond jewelry that they have seen on the wealthy and famous. It would almost seem that we are far quicker to seek out the symbols of wealth and fame than to question what one has done to achieve that wealth and fame.
