untitled-79.jpgEvery mother expects a special gift on Mother’s Day and it is not certainly not uncommon for new mothers to receive gifts upon the delivery of their babies. A new trend has arrived in the last few years; however, and it is taking the jewelry world by storm. Push presents.Push presents, which frequently take the form of diamond jewelry, are presents which are presented to a new mother as a type of reward for the pain and suffering she endures both while pregnant and while giving birth.

Giving a present following the birth of a child is not anything new. In the past; however, most dads felt a lovely bouquet of flowers was sufficient. In a surprising trend; however, more and more mothers are receiving something decidedly more extravagant when their precious bundle of joy arrives; diamond jewelry.

The trend began with American film stars who began presenting gifts of jewelry to the mothers of their children after giving birth. That trend quickly caught on and more and more new mothers are now expecting their husbands and significant others to follow along.

When Pierce Brosnan’s wife Keely gave birth, he presented her with three diamond and gold bracelets. Other stars have followed suit, including Matthew Broderick, who presented wife Sarah Jessica Parker with a bracelet when their son was born.

The trend of presenting jewelry to new mothers after they have given birth has become so widespread that there are now even names for these presents. They are most commonly known as push presents because they are given as a type of reward for giving birth; however, they are also referred to as ‘baby baubles’.

Judging by the number of women who are ‘pushing’ their husbands to come up with the presents, the trend is definitely on the upswing. A recent survey conducted by BabyCenter.com discovered that almost half of all new mothers receive these post-pregnancy presents. Even more women stated that they completely expected their husbands and significant others to arrive in the delivery room with something special in hand.

Jewelry companies have quickly caught on to this growing trend. Some have even begun to design a special line of jewelry that is specifically targeted at new mothers. Colored stones, especially blue and pink stones, have jumped in popularity as husbands search for a unique jewelry gift to mark such a special occasion. Others have begun to set-up gift registries similar to what you would find for baby gifts. These types of registries allow expectant mothers to choose what they would like from the rather unique motherhood lines and then email hints to their husbands to ensure they receive exactly what they want.

While certainly not all husbands have caught on to this growing trend, the pressure is certainly present for them to give in. The level of expectation from women giving birth to receive something in compensation for being pregnant for nine months, losing their figures, enduring months of sickness and the final pain of childbirth is certainly increasing and many men are finding they are not able to turn away from the level of guilt that can quickly build up.

While it is not unusual for new mothers to receive a token of appreciation after giving birth, commonly flowers in the past, today push presents are likely to be presented before the birth, after the birth and sometimes even in the delivery room.

Unlike many other gift giving trends which have largely risen from the jewelry industry in an effort to market goods, this is one trend that does not seem to have risen directly from the jewelry industry. In fact, many jewelers are finding that they are rushing to catch-up to a trend that appears to have largely risen from consumers, especially in the last couple of years, in the United States. The trend is not that unknown in other countries, especially England and India; where it is a common enough practice for women to receive some type of jewelry following the birth of their children.

There has been some speculation that the increase of the trend in the United States could be due to the assertiveness of many women who are no longer hesitant to ask for what they want. Others are quick to point out; however, that men in general are becoming more sensitive and therefore aware of the sacrifices given by their pregnant partners.

Regardless of how the trend arrived, it certainly appears to be here to stay. Lines of jewelry which are designed to target the growing trend range from a variety of styles and designs as well as price ranges. Husbands and partners can choose from something simple and elegant with a price of just a few hundred dollars to something more elaborate with price tags well into the thousands.
