If you’ve never seen the variety of colors possible with diamond gemstones, you should visit the Aurora Collection of diamonds. The collection consists of 296 diamonds totaling over 250 carats in weight. The collection was put together by Alan Bronstein and Harry Rodman and contains 12 different color varieties, ranging from blues and violets to greens, reds, and orange colored stones. The collection took 25 years to build, with many of the stones being bought prior to the public falling in love with fancy colored diamonds.

Fancy colored diamonds are estimated to occur once in every 10,000 diamonds of gemstone quality. One of the features of the Aurora collection are what some people refer to as “chameleon” diamonds, which are even more rare than fancy colored diamonds. These diamonds are so named for their ability to appear to change colors under different lighting, with the majority of these stones appearing green or olive in color and changing to yellow when they are heated too.

The Aurora collection tours different museums around the world, sometimes appearing in the United States and more recently in the Natural History Museum in London. Check online to see where the next exhibit might take place. You can even see photographs online of a few of the beautiful stones in the collection up close. This collection is one way to see the variety of colors possible with diamonds and can dissuade you of the notion that all beautiful diamonds are white.
