For those that have a love of diamonds and a love of the movies, finding one with both ideas is a treat. Diamond investing, fraud and heists are at the heart of real life adventures. Movies love to imitate real life. They are also well written and although they may seem like, most aren’t taken from any real life situations. A great diamond plot is the heart of many movies that have hit the big screen. If you are looking for movies that involve diamonds, you are in luck, there are many available and there are more to hit the theaters soon.

untitled-125.jpgIf you are a fan of Dan Aykroyd or Kirk Douglas, you should rent the movie “Diamonds.” You can find it in the drama or comedy section of your local movie store. The plot involves some hilarious lines along with many dramatic scenes. The story starts off with the main character, Larry, taking his son and grandson on a road trip. They travel to Reno to seek out 13 diamonds that have been stashed away for years. The ex-boxer stashed them after he took them as a payoff for throwing a fight. The ex-boxing champion has decided that he does not want to live his life out in an old age home after surviving his stroke. Larry and his son learn a lot along the way and reconcile a broken relationship. Although this movie did not fare well at the box office, it is an excellent rental and will leave you in hysterics.

Another “diamond in the rough” is the movie “To Catch a Thief.” This 1955 Oscar award winning movie stars Grace Kelly and is one of the most loved movies of all times. The movie has an ingenious script about a diamond thief who tries to find out who the new copy cat thief is. Since he has been retired he must make sure that he is not blamed for this new series of thefts. Many of the robberies take place on the French Riviera. Robbie, the retired diamond thief, employs an insurance agent to help him figure out where the thief will strike next. Grace Kelly portrays the daughter of a wealthy widow that befriends him. The movie is a must see for anyone that loves a good plot and loves to be left in suspense.

untitled-126.jpgDiamonds in the movies have been around for years. We have seen James Bond perform in many movies that involve diamonds, along with many other big names. Recently the “Ocean’s” characters have taken on a diamond necklace as part of their very well paid heists. The year to come is loaded with movies that are about diamond heists. One in particular, “Brilliance,” began filming in the winter of 2007 and is expected to come out sometime in late 2008 or early 2009. It stars Scarlett Johansson and is about diamond heists and diamond thieves. The director Samuel Bayer chose Scarlett after he also directed her in a recent music video with Justin Timberlake.

Another diamond heist headed to the theaters is “The Thomas Crown Affair 2.” It is expected to be out in late 2008. Pierce Brosnan shows us his stuff as he comes back on the big screen playing Thomas Crown again. He continues in his playboy role. This time Brosnan’s character is looking for more interesting things to steal than art. His new quest is finding and stealing the Kasikci Diamond from the Topkapki Palace in Istanbul. Although filming hasn’t begun on this production, it is expected to start very soon. We can always look to Peirce Brosnan for a good heist.

Demi Moore can often be found playing many roles, all in which she is very good. In her latest film, “Flawless” starring opposite Michael Caine she portrays an ambitious company executive. Her career has stalled and she finds out that she is going to be fired by those that have stolen her ideas. She teams up with Michael Caine and conspires to loot an evil diamond company in London. The movie takes place in 1960 and is exciting to watch. Michael Caine’s character is a quiet janitor that is able to shuffle in and out of the company’s personal files. He gets information and he and Laura (Demi’s character) begin searching for codes to get into the diamond vault.

These diamond heist movies are becoming a dime a dozen. Although many are being written and executed, the plots all vary and are very fun to watch. A good movie with a diamond heist is sure to hit the theaters a few times a year. If you are waiting for one, you won’t have to wait too long. The few that are set to be released in 2008 are worth the wait. If you can’t wait, head to your local movie rental store and look in the drama section. There are dozens waiting to be watched.
