Celebrities and the wealthy enjoy lavishing their pets with diamond jewelry. This trend is on the increase for people who are the image-makers in our society, and as such, it may end up affecting the types of accessories the everyday person wants for their pets. In the past, the show of diamonds on a pet was considered a statement that one could afford luxury beyond the common person and a decided status symbol. Jewelers are capitalizing on this idea with luxury fashion shows aimed at not their clients but their clients’ pets! This is definitely a trend to watch and to consider the next time you are out buying Fido a new collar.

Examples that Started the Trend

Heiress Evalyn McLean probably had the most ostentatious display of canine affection when she pinned the Blue Hope diamond to his collar every now and then. Its estimated worth is about $250 million dollars at this point. Continuing this fashion trend, Paris Hilton’s Chihuahua, Tinkerbell, has its own diamond-studded collar. Movies are showing pets with bling more and more. In the movie Legally Blonde, Reese Witherspoon’s pet Chihuahua also sports a diamond collar. Collars aren’t the only things being sold for pets that like the lap of luxury. There are also charms with diamonds that can be attached to the collar, and cats are getting in on the action too.

Pet-A-Porter

Ever hear of designers using the term “prêt-a-porter” for their ready to wear collection? Well, Harrods jewelers are now in their fifth year of a fashion show that is a take-off on this name called “pet a porter.” Here, the pets are the stars of the catwalk and the air of luxury is all in the details of the fine pet accessories from diamond collars to brooches and other fashion accessories.
