    The rich and famous know that the white diamond, familiar to most people, is not the only type of diamond to sport. There’s the yellow diamond, for example, or the pink diamond. However, there’s another diamond that is making an appearance on the ears, wrists and necks of celebrities and that’s the brown diamond. As some have said, “brown is the new white.” Diamonds that have an earth-tone are now becoming some of the most popular diamonds to own.

    Who are some of the celebrities that can be seen wearing the new brown diamond designs? You can find brown diamonds on Paris Hilton, Serena Williams and Hayden Panettiere. These are celebrities that have set the clothing and jewelry styles that others rush to follow.

    Are they called brown diamonds? Not by the jewelers who offer them. Calling a diamond a brown diamond does not contribute to sales. Therefore, names such as “champagne” and “cognac” are popular for today’s brown diamonds.

    For those who are rich enough to buy diamond jewelry to match their outfits, a “chocolate” diamond is what they would want for a chocolate colored outfit. Indeed, many women are catching on to the title “chocolate” and are enjoying the sound of the name and the look of the diamonds.

    Only one out of every 10,000 diamonds qualifies as a colored diamond. A rare diamond is a brown, gray or black diamond. A very rare diamond is an orange, yellow or olive diamond. An extremely rare diamond is a pink, blue or green diamond. Finally, the rarest of diamonds are the red and purple diamonds. Although not as rare and expensive as the pink diamond or the blue diamond, the brown diamond is still considered a rare and expensive find.

    Brown diamonds are found in southern African and Siberia mines. However the largest producer of brown diamonds is the Argyle mine in Australia.

    Brown diamonds were not viewed as attractive or as nice as the white diamond has been viewed. However, the image and attitude of the brown diamond began to change in the 1990′s.

    High end designers are known for innovation and for creating the trends. Retailers are keen on customer wants and desires. Today, high end designers are mixing the traditional white with brown or are creating brown designs on their own. Retailers are picking up on the fact that the brown designs are gaining attention.

    At least seven percent of the diamond business, or approximately $4 to $5 billion, is a result of brown diamond sales. Those numbers are predicted to rise as brown diamond designs increase.

    Although high end diamonds are reserved for the wealthy, it is possible for every woman to own a brown diamond, even though the diamonds are rarer than white diamonds. Some companies are offering brown diamonds in a wide range of prices. A woman can buy a “chocolate” piece for as little as $200 at some stores. However, these same “chocolate” diamonds in other pieces can command up to as much as $100,000.
