We love our pets. Statistics indicate that roughly eighty percent of pet owners consider the animals in their home and on their property as members of their families, and more than sixty percent of them purchase gifts for their pets on a regular basis.

The wide number of luxury and attentive boarding facilities, mobile groomers and gourmet pet food manufacturers shows that we like to treat our “furry family members” just as nicely as we do our human family as well.

This pattern has expanded to include custom made dog shelters and indoor “palaces”, clothing, shoes, flatware and serving pieces, car seats, videos and now diamond jewelry. Within the past five years there have been high end pet diamond shows in London and parts of Russia, million dollar collars especially crafted by famous designers and jewelry houses and even websites dedicated to offering matching “bling” for pets and their owners. We’ll take a quick look at only a few of the diamond products currently available for pets.

Of course this isn’t necessarily an entirely new trend since many royal families around the world have some ancestor who dressed a beloved spaniel or pampered puss in a set of jewels or specially crafted collar. In fact, the owner of the Hope Diamond, Evalyn Walsh McLean, allowed her dog to wear the gem around her home. This often startled her guests who knew the value of the enormous, and supposedly cursed blue diamond.

When you also consider the prices and lengths people will accept or go to in order to acquire a specific breed of cat or dog, or even birds and snakes, it really isn’t all that astonishing to hear that these same folks are providing the precious pet with some luxury gifts and goods.

So, what’s available for today’s pet lovers? Among the most popular and easy to acquire are the bejeweled collars. Of course they are usually custom made to the owner’s specifications and can be valued from a few hundred dollars to over a million. At a recent dog diamond jewelry show in London, England one of the world’s most well-known fashion designers created a one of a kind diamond and precious jewel collar with an appraised value at just over a million dollars. She also offered a “discount” version of the same product that had a retail price of five thousand dollars, but both versions were outfitted with diamonds for a precious pooch to show off.

During the same event a sturdier leather, gold and diamond collar debuted and was donned by a portly English bulldog. The “ruff” diamonds collar had incredibly large and rough cut stones bevel set in yellow gold at intervals around the neck piece and even included a gold buckle and dog bone charm.

It’s not all about the dogs however, and Ivana Trump, ex-wife of billionaire mogul Donald Trump is known as a very passionate cat fancier and is rumored to dress up her felines in expensive jeweled items. While stories abound, there has been one documented event during which she spent over one hundred thousand dollars on a pave diamond necklace for a particularly favored cat.

Of course such gifts are not easily within reach of the everyday consumer, but there are still some excellent options for anyone who wants to provide some bling for their pet. There are single jewel collars easily found all across the Internet, which offer a good quality single stone usually set into a leather collar suitable to the size of the pet.

There are also special identification tags that can be set with a single stone and engraved with the animal’s name and owner information. There are also tags that are heavily encrusted with stones and meant to serve just as a decorative pendant would around an owner’s neck.

Many people have also jumped on to the newest and hottest trend and that is dog and pet collars that serve as giant charm bracelets and many diamond charms are available for such items. These come in stylish figures such as shoes and bones or more whimsical shapes such as flowers and cats.

It’s also a good idea to consider such luxury items when searching for a gift for a friend who treats their pets as their children. For them there are dog whistles with diamond chips, leads and leashes crafted from leather and fitted with diamonds and even gifts that can be given as “matching sets” to an owner and their pet, such as the decorative charms and tags.

It is important to be sure that anything with a diamond set into it is sturdy enough for the day to day use of a dog, and that nothing will be able to shake loose and be swallowed. While this could see the loss of a good diamond it might also cause some harm to the pet and is best avoided whenever possible.
