Diamonds are said to be some of the most sought after stones in the world. Besides their beauty and brilliance, they are worth quite a bit. Diamonds are used to show wealth, power and often times love. Men buy women diamonds to say “I love you,” or to say, “Will you marry me?”
The quest for diamonds is often something that can get one in trouble though. Instead of simply buying a diamond that is affordable, people will do anything to acquire the unobtainable diamonds they see on television and in the movies. This goal ends up either getting them in trouble, or landing them in jail.
Diamonds are stolen anywhere, anytime. In fact, in November of 2007, Manhattan officials were put on alert for diamond thieves at open houses. A blonde woman and her companion were attending open houses and stealing diamond jewelry. Other items they got away with were bottles of champagne, a fur coat and handbags. Using the real estate industry to get their diamonds was pretty clever, but eventually they will get caught. They hit at least three houses in one day. They were able to steal the jewelry because one individual would distract the broker while the other one would go through the house clearing out items. The couple managed to steal a diamond engagement ring and an heirloom ring given to the seller by their grandmother.
Manhattan seems to have many people that want to horde diamonds. There are diamond thieves all over the world; Manhattan is just being taken by storm lately. A diamond dealer was recently accused of stealing three million dollars in jewelry. The diamond dealers of the Manhattan wholesale diamond district accused the dealer and now he said to have left the country. The accused Mr. Taub, 28, is said to have only been trading diamonds in the city for eleven months before he vanished. The dealers have filed a suit against him hoping to freeze his assets.
For those that are swindling others out of diamonds or are thinking up new ways to steal them, get busy, one of the most expensive pieces of contemporary art has been created. A life sized platinum skull called, For the Love of God, is set with 8,601 quality diamonds and is worth 100 million dollars. Although the artist was afraid it might be a little tacky, it has been taken in by the art world and many are looking forward to its debut. White Cube Gallery is selling several limited edition silk screen prints sprinkled with diamond dust. The artist, Hirst, financed the piece himself.
For many people diamonds are Christmas presents and engagement rings. They are gifts that they receive on special occasions and are thrilled to have. We don’t think any further about them than that. For other people, diamonds are their life, and this does not include those that work in jewelry stores. They will do and say anything to get their diamonds. The price can often be dangerous, but many are willing to risk it.
