Celebrity events and heavily watched ceremonies usually see a lot of diamond jewelry draped from necklines, ears and wrists. Lately however, the fashion trend is moving away from the neck and even shrinking the size of the earrings while taking a distinct turn south. Diamond bracelets are in! It takes only a quick look through the recent fashion coverage to see that diamond bracelets are now being used to make some pretty funky and fashion-forward statements. Some recent examples of the popularity of diamonds at the wrist include First Lady Michelle Obama who opted for a wrist full of sparklers on the night of the Inaugural Ball. Of course these were not the hefty or high carat type, but a clutch of delicate bangles that moved fluidly with each wave to the crowd, and as she held her husband’s shoulder. This was not the first time she had chosen this particular style for a formal event. During the Kid’s Inaugural event she also had a stack of heavier diamonds around her wrist and was wearing some diamond bracelets on election night as well.
Of course it isn’t just thin, fragile or delicate bands of diamonds that are appearing on the wrists of the fashion-forward people. Consider Demi Moore’s unique use of vintage diamond bangles at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards ceremony. Her peach halter dress was heavily accented at the neck with crystals, and to balance out the absence of a chunky necklace, the actress gathered three hefty vintage diamond bracelets at each wrist. It was certainly one way to display a special collection!
Other unique ways of wearing diamond bracelets appeared on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild awards ceremony as well. Actress Freida Pinto from the hot new film “Slumdog Millionaire” wrapped her hair, styled in a sweeping up do, with a whopping fifty-three carat rectangular diamond bracelet. She didn’t leave her wrist out of the fun and slapped a seven row diamond bracelet on there as well.
This leads to the trendiness of diamond bracelets being composed of more than a single row of stones. Actress Kate Winslet appeared at the SAG awards with a three row diamond bracelet, while Desiree Underwood chose a seven row beauty for her appearance at the 2009 Golden Globes.
The final red carpet diamond bracelet trend is the diamond cuff style bracelets appearing on those in either extremely feminine ensembles or in the more streamlined gowns.
What does this mean for those who don’t parade up and down the red carpets? It means a lot of fun choices to add to a wardrobe. All ready jewelers are offering items similar to those being worn by celebrities. The “Michelle Obama effect” is going to be seen in fashion and jewelry for a long time to come. This means slender diamond bangle bracelets and chandelier style earrings are going to be available in many shops thanks to her fashion sensibility.
Clearly the red carpet isn’t the only appropriate place to sport diamonds, and it isn’t only celebrities that are wearing diamonds at their wrists. One of the hottest items available for women of all ages is diamond charm bracelets. Based on the long tradition of metal charms, the diamonds add an element of formality and fun to each new addition. These can be the ideal gift for a teenager as a way of starting a new tradition or mark special achievements, or they make excellent romantic gifts as well.
Some may want their own copies of red carpet looks, and both high end and commercial manufacturers will make the cuffs, bangles and chunkier pieces available for a wide range of budgets. It is important to remember that some of these pieces are simply trendy and may be out of fashion in short period of time. It is probably best to select something with more flexibility than something truly different from the norm. For example, there are many cuff style diamond bracelets appearing on the red carpet. These can be quite bulky and awkward in an everyday scenario, but many jewelers make a simple variation suitable for day to day wear, as well as the more ornate choices. An investment in a simpler variation of the cuff or buckle bracelets is probably going to allow for more wear.
Another trend in diamond bracelets that is seen less on the red carpet and more in the real world is the hinged diamond bracelet. Similar to classic precious metal cuffs, these add some real bling to an everyday wardrobe. Luckily they are an incredibly reasonably priced option and make a wonderful gift, especially for Valentine’s Day or a birthday.
