loupe.jpgThe Gemological Institute of America is widely known in the diamond industry. It was established in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley. He recognized the need of the jewelry industry in the United States to come up with professional standards. These would be in relation to the business practices of traders. Moreover, those who are engaged in the trade should also receive adequate training to ensure that they would be able to produce high-quality products to their clients. At 44, he created GIA in Los Angeles, California. It was also in 1931 that he launched his book entitled Gemology.

What makes GIA the most sought-after certification organization all over the world is its great emphasis on research. If not for their constant development and innovation in the field of gemology, one would not be able to distinguish real gemstones from the synthetic ones. Most of all, there would never be world-renowned diamond cutters, polishers, and jewelers if not for the certification programs of GIA.

GIA is also popular for their grading services of diamonds. The reports they provide are one of the essential bases in determining the real value of a loose diamond. They offer two kinds of reports. The first one is referred to as the Diamond Grading Report. The, second, called the Diamond Dossier, is shorter and less expensive. These reports will determine the ranking of key characteristics of your loose diamond. GIA now has competitors offering diamond grading services, yet many still prefer GIA because of their very strict guidelines.
