While diamonds on the commercial market are frequently clear, colored diamonds are becoming much more popular today. Yellow diamonds in particular have become one of the most popular color diamonds.Recently, however, some extremely rare purple diamonds were discovered in Quebec. Nearly 750 diamonds were discovered in the region, nine of which were purple. The surface rock samples which were brought up were estimated to be nearly 3 billion years old.
News of the discovery of the purple diamonds was immediately well received due to the fact that colored diamonds are quite rare and as a result usually quite expensive. Purple diamonds are considered to be one of the rarer colors of diamonds.
Purple diamonds, which are considered to be fancy colored diamonds, are created when boron is infused into the crystal structure of the diamond. Fancy colored diamonds by themselves are generally rather rare; however, purple diamonds are considered to be extremely rare. Over the years, other fancy colored diamonds have been discovered in various parts of the world including yellow diamonds, green diamonds, pink diamonds, black diamonds and even brown diamonds.
The largest of the purple diamonds discovered in the Quebec region measured some 335×379x225 microns. The discovery of the purple diamonds in Quebec was immediately considered to be one of the most exciting diamond discoveries to be made in the world in quite some time. In the last few years, Canada has become noted for its tremendous diamond mining capabilities with several regions within Canada producing a large percentage of the diamonds from around the world. The diamond find in which the purple diamonds were contained is believed to be the largest diamond find in Quebec to date.
As Canada gears up to become one of the leading diamond producers in the world, this is certainly welcome news. Diamond mining has become quite a boon to the Canadian economy, with a large amount of money being pumped into the mining of diamonds in the Northwestern Territories. This discovery of the purple diamonds, along with quite large clear diamonds, would seem to indicate that the money being invested in the mining of diamonds in Canada is certainly well worth it.
As the diamonds are considered to be quite rare, they will certainly bring more than a fair price on the diamond market. In recent years, fancy colored diamonds have been spotlighted as celebrities become fonder of diamonds which are somewhat out of the ordinary. Jennifer Lopez was presented with a pink diamond engagement ring by Ben Affleck when they were engaged several years ago. More recently, she was presented with a lavish canary yellow diamond ring by her current husband Marc Anthony following the birth of their twins. Heidi Klum was also the recipient of a yellow diamond ring when Seal proposed to her. The fondness of fancy colored diamonds by celebrities has certainly not gone unnoticed by the public, who have quickly turned their attention to colored diamonds as well.
