Many times when you hear that a product has a brand name you automatically think that it is of great quality. This is why many companies are putting brands on the diamonds that they produce. They want the consumer to automatically recognize great quality diamonds when they hear their brand of diamonds being mentioned. It is not only diamond companies that are placing brands on diamonds, many diamond jewelry designers, diamond cutters, and retailers are putting brands on their diamonds.
Placing a brand on a diamond is done using a very precise laser to inscribe the brand name, logo, and registration number on the edge of the diamond. Branding a diamond has become very popular, but just because a diamond does not have a brand does not mean that it is less valuable or beautiful. In fact, there are not many diamonds that currently have brands.
There are benefits and disadvantages to branding diamonds. A diamond that has a brand makes it very easy to identify all of the diamonds history, such as the maker and diamond cutter.
The disadvantage of branding diamonds is that it is very easy to copy brands. This means that a trademark can be duplicated onto a diamond of lesser value, but you would not know this and would pay a much higher price because you thought that it was a better quality diamond. There are new technologies being developed to try to “fraud proof” diamond brands.
Right now diamond branding is only a trend, only time and the consumers preference will determine if branding will become an essential in the diamond market.
