There are many factors that must be considered when a diamond is cut including weight retention, which minimizes the amount of waste diamond. It truly takes a professional with many years of both schooling and hands-on practice to figure out the correct cut for the diamond rough.+

Diamond cutting is both an art and a science. To learn the science portion, an individual must attend one of the schools that exists for this such practice. While attending, the student learns the basic about the physical properties of diamonds so that he or she is able to use that information to make the best cuts possible to utilize the diamond’s natural beauty. While at school, the student learns every aspect of diamond cutting so that they are able to make these cuts with no assistance.

Once they graduate and are able to cut on their own, they usually study as an apprentice and watch other, more experienced diamond cutters at work. It is important that this new cutter not make any mistakes, as wasting rough diamonds that have been sorted as gem quality is very costly. Once the mentor feels that his “student” is ready, they can cut diamonds on their own.
