Diamonds are typically associated with South Africa and some parts of Australia these days. However, prior to their discovery in these countries, India used to be the prime location for gemstone quality diamonds, though they were not originally mined. The diamonds that came from India between the 9th and mid 18th century from India were from alluvial deposits along river banks. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 19th century that India’s alluvial diamond deposits were depleted and South Africa began to mine them from inside the earth.

    What are Alluvial Deposits?

Alluvial deposits are mineral deposits that occur in rivers and streams when the current tears rock formations away from other areas and carry it further downstream. As the current decreases, the heavier layers of sediment or mineral can become deposited in certain areas along the streams or river beds, which are then ripe for commercial exploitation.

Diamonds today are mostly mined from deep within the earth, but they used to be carried along the river beds and streams of India. After consistent exploitation of these alluvial deposits in India over the centuries, the country no longer has significant diamond resources from alluvial deposits.

    Diamond Mining

Diamond exploration today focuses on the kimberlite and lamproite pipes where the diamonds originate from volcanic eruptions deep within the earth. Rich deposits of diamonds were found and mining operations to extract them from their source began in South Africa and since have spread to other countries since diamonds were first found along the river beds of India.
