mias_ring-2.jpgDiamonds are beautiful and it is tempting to wear your diamonds at all times. Whether they are your first pair of diamond earrings or your precious engagement ring, you may vow to never take them off unless it is an emergency situation. However, there are a few occasions when wearing them may not be the best for you, or not the best for your diamonds. Here are just a few of the times when you should take off your rings, earrings, or necklaces, which may stay on you a majority of the time. The first occasion is while doing cleaning around the house, the car, or other locations. Any time you will be doing rough work or working with harsh cleaners, you should refrain from wearing your diamonds. Such harsh cleaners include chlorine bleach and similar products. Additionally, rough work includes any sort of work or activity that could chip your diamonds or cause the prongs to be loosened. So when scrubbing the toilets or even cleaning under the bed, leave your ring placed safely in your jewelry box until your chores are done. This will make you feel better as you finish up your dirty work and may even make you finish up more quickly to place your jewelry back in its rightful place.

The second occasion is when you are around the water. While it may be tempting to sport your new rock during a fourth of July gathering at the lake, you may want to keep your ring somewhere safe instead. Anytime you are in a large body of water, like a pool, a lake, or the ocean, you will want to take off your diamonds and keep them at home. Not only could your diamond come loose or get scratched, but you could actually lose the entire item while playing in the water and not immediately realize it. Then, finding the piece of jewelry could prove to be impossible and you may lose one of your favorite items, like your engagement ring, permanently.

Times when you are around water can also include the shower. In addition to accidentally losing your diamonds while washing your hair or your body, the products you use, like your shampoo, conditioner, or body wash, can build-up on your diamonds causing them to lose their luster. It is best to take them off before you go into the bathroom.

Another occasion when you may want to take off your diamonds is when you head to bed. In addition to scratching your headboard, when your diamonds rub against your sheets or your pillow case, it can loosen the prongs of your ring or your earrings, which will either cause your diamonds to fall out in your bed or even later in the next days after being loosened. It may be best to take your rings off or your earrings out each night and replace them in the morning after your shower. This will alleviate many of the issues.

While it may be tempting to trust that nothing will happen to your diamonds, the reality is that you can never control what will happen in every situation. Therefore, your best solution is to be cautious in times when your jewelry may be at risk. This includes all jewelry and not just your diamonds. Getting into the habit of taking them off and placing them safely in a jewelry container is a good habit to begin practicing. By taking the necessary steps, you can help ensure that your diamonds will last a lifetime.

Now that you know when to take off your diamonds, it is also important to know where to keep your diamonds after they are off your hands or ears. For many people, the easiest solution is to place them nearby if you are doing some work that may harm your diamonds. However, this could prove to be a mistake, especially if you take off your ring and place it next to the sink as you do your dishes and your ring falls down the drain. Instead, place jewelry in a lined jewelry box away from other items that may scratch them.

Even when you take off your diamonds to keep them as safe as possible, you should still take them to the jewelers for a routine check and cleaning. Many times, when you purchase your diamonds, they will come with a warranty or insurance that requires at least an annual, if not semi-annual, visit to your local jeweler. A jeweler will check to see if the prongs have loosened or if there is any visible wear on the mounting. Generally, you will even get a free cleaning out of the deal, which is always a nice way to let you see your diamonds sparkle at their best once again.
