untitled-111.jpgDiamonds say a great deal about their wearer and celebrities are a fun way to demonstrate this. The size of a diamond can indicate whether they prefer displaying their wealth very visibly or with subtlety. Their jewelry being antique or very modern speaks volumes about their individual tastes. The parts of themselves they choose to decorate can reveal a great deal about how they view themselves. Diamonds are far more than jewelry; they’re an external means of expressing one’s inner-self.

Diamonds are famously used to symbolize the enduring nature of the love that one individual feels toward another. They are oftentimes presented as gifts to mark an engagement or upon actually being married. To that end, the gifting party tends to choose items that reveal something about how they see their partner.

Grace Kelly is still admired for her incredible beauty and her elegant demeanor. Not surprisingly, she became a princess, wedded to Prince Rainier of Monaco. To mark their engagement, he presented her with a 12 carat diamond ring. The diamond was emerald cut, one of the most enduring and popular cuts, befitting a woman who looked all her life like she should have been royalty.

In a similar fashion, Michael Douglas saw a timeless beauty in his wife-to-be, Catherine Zeta-Jones, when he presented her with a 10 carat marquise cut diamond ring on their engagement. The fact that the ring was antique reveals that both of them appreciate that which endures and from which time cannot steal beauty.

Not all examples of celebrity diamonds are seen in such poignant moments as engagements and marriages, however. In fact, diamonds are often the showpiece of the star’s outfits at the Oscars, Hollywood’s biggest award show. The women at the event are well known for sporting some of the most spectacular designs in the world. What they choose to wear is quite revealing about their persona as a celebrity and as an individual.

In 2006, Nicole Kidman earned her reputation as a stunning beauty. Showing up to the Oscars in a black dress that offset beautifully the over 7,000 diamonds of which her multi-strand necklace was made, she truly stole the show on the red carpet. Kidman is always portrayed as a woman who represents the finer aspects of fashion and is often a preferred client of the most popular and elite fashion designers in the world. Where jewelry is concerned, this remains very much the same.

Natalie Portman, on the other hand, is often renowned for the subtlety of her personality and for having a persona that commands both attention and respect without demanding it on screen. On the red carpet, she exhibited both in 2009. She wore a dress which was, while very understated in design, fuschia in color; a shade not known for being subtle. Likewise, she wore tear-drop diamond earrings which required the viewer to look closely to notice their beauty. Diamonds can either pop off the screen and boldly reflect the flash of every camera snapping photos or make the viewer pay attention and look more closely, as Portman demonstrated.

Diamond jewelry, when seen on the stars, still serves its purpose in regard to denoting royalty as much as ever. In the 1960′s, there were few stars as revered or respected as Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Their versatility as actors and Taylor’s breath taking beauty defined them as among the royalty of the time. They dressed accordingly. Among the diamonds which Burton presented Taylor was a diamond that bears their names, the Taylor-Burton diamond, which weighs over 69 carats. Taylor was famously enamored of the lustrous gems and, in addition to the Taylor Burton diamond, she owned the 39 carat Krupp diamond and the Taj Mahal diamond, which dates to the 1600′s.

The settings in which diamonds are placed often reveals a great deal about the stars who wear them, as well. For instance, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt sport wedding bands of non-traditional platinum. Platinum is one of the most popular metals for setting diamonds at present. The silver-white color of the metal can bring out the beauty of a diamond like few other substances. Likewise, Paris Hilton was not presented with one ring during a brief engagement, but two. Where conspicuous consumption is concerned, there are few more representative than the young socialite and, love it or hate it, there are few things that represent wealth as strongly as do diamonds.

Diamonds may reside on a finger or around a neck, but they tend to represent something about the wearer that goes much deeper. Though celebrities may be good examples simply because they’re visible, the same can revealed by any individual’s jewelry, be it a spectacular necklace or a wedding ring that never left the finger on which it was placed.
