Every fashion show this week seemed to have some celebrity sitting in the front row. The New York fashion week was ablaze with polka dots, fur, pearls, and diamonds. There were numerous celebrities who showed up to show their support to their favorite designers. Others may have been bribed to make an appearance, as it is rumored that designers pay sitting fees for public appearances of top celebrities in the front row of their shows.
Michael Kors
The designer, Michael Kors, scored A-list names like Michael Douglas, his wife Catherine Zeta Jones, Bette Midler, Debra Messing, and Angelica Huston. Bette Midler wore a lacy sheath dress with a white cardigan sweater. She accessorized with black pumps and all gold jewelry. She was very much in style with this year’s emphasis on textures. Quilted fabrics, furs, and leather all made numerous appearances on the runway of different shows. Jersey dresses, pajama style pants, beaded gowns and fur are all part of the fall Kors lineup.
Oscar de la Renta
The Oscar de la Renta show also paid homage to textured fabrics. He showcased a patchwork Jacquard coat in floral motifs with embroidery and stripes. The jewelry for the Oscar de la Renta show was exquisite with drop earrings in a rainbow of gemstone colors from brilliant blues dark reds. Choker collars made some models necks look even thinner than usual. Multiple strands of pearls or beads gave weight to the fall/winter look.
Rodarte
Sofia Coppola, Kanye West, and Kirsten Dunst showed up seated in the front at the Rodarte show. Rodarte featured several gowns with prints of wheat blowing in the wind along the hem, along with a number of other dresses that featured sunset moments in nature. The idea seems to be catching on because one of the designer’s fans wore it to the show. Texture was also front and center in the collection with lace, sequins, and beads adding visual appeal to the designs. Rodarte has gained much acclaim for designing the costumes for the set of Black Swan.
Narciso Rodriguez
There was nothing funny about the Rodriguez collection, even though Jerry Seinfeld and his wife sat in the front row. His style is more of a sleek modernist twist. There was not as much fur as other shows, but more than Rodriguez typically uses.
Marc Jacobs
The Marc Jacobs show attracted Whoopi Goldberg and Martha Stewart, but the look was anything but conservative. With a nod towards insane asylums and sex shops, Marc had his models wearing textured rubber, along with lace and fur. Polka dots showed up in new and ingenious ways as prints on rubber and on sheer fabrics, too. The look was finished off by using pill box hats that were tied securely around the model’s chins.
Rachel Roy
When you can get the First Lady to wear your designs, you know you’re in the right business. She worked with layers, prints, and lots of color, just like many of the other designers during New York Fashion Week.
