As everyone knows, when it comes to practically everything, celebrities are known for going over the top. Their homes are ten times bigger than the average dwelling, their clothing budget is akin to what most people bring home over a five year period and the cost of their jewelry would rival the national budget of a small country. When it comes time to design engagement and wedding rings, celebrities naturally turn to extremely well known designers.
Since Hollywood began its rise to fame during the early part of the 20th century, celebrities and stars have looked for ways to cement their relationships using engagement rings that are nothing short of spectacular. When both individuals being married are stars, it only stands to reason that the engagement ring should feature a diamond that rivals the stars in its brilliancy.
Over the years, jewelers have created some of the most opulent and famous engagement rings to be worn by celebrities. When Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor, he sought the assistance of highly regarded jewelers to create an engagement ring that would be worthy of the violet-eyed star. Eventually, the groom-to-be purchased a whopping 70-carat pear shaped diamond engagement ring for Liz. Of course, considering the size of some engagement rings that are presented today, 70 carats is really not that large. Some might even call it modest.
The price tag for celebrity engagement rings and wedding rings can vary significantly, depending on the rarity of the stone chosen, the size of the stone and other elements that are included in the design of the ring. On the low end of the spectrum, celebrity engagement rings can run under $100,000. On the high end of the spectrum, some celebrities pay as much as a few million dollars when they purchase an engagement ring or wedding ring.
When shopping for jewelry from such well known sources, it is helpful to understand the trends that have driven celebrity engagement rings in the last few years. When Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise finally wed in a candlelit ceremony in a castle in Italy, she wore a massive but romantic diamond engagement ring. The ring Tom chose for his bride reflected a five carat oval diamond in a platinum and pave setting. Compared to the size of some celebrity engagement rings, Katie’s ring is certainly modest, but it seems to suit the love struck couple quite well.
Tom and Katie are not the only celebrities to stick with a traditional setting. Fergie also chose a very classic cut as well. Her ring is set with a three carat round, brilliant cut diamond in a platinum band. The estimated value for her ring is in the neighborhood of $75,000. Considering that many celebrity engagement rings cost several million dollars each, Fergie’s ring was also quite modest by comparison.
Ashlee Simpson is another bride who chose to go the classic route via a vintage style. Ashlee’s ring is a 4 carat Asscher cut that is encircled with several smaller diamonds. What makes her ring so unique is the fact that it does feature an Asscher cut, which is actually quite rare today. Estimated value of her ring? Around $100,000.
Scarlett Johansson is another starlet who chose to go with a traditional cut when she became engaged. Her engagement ring featured a three carat round diamond in a yellow gold, pave setting band.
What kind of ring does the daughter of a president choose when she becomes engaged? If the girl is Jenna Bush, it is apparently also an antique styled ring. Jenna’s engagement ring featured a 1.5 carat round center stone surrounded by smaller round sapphires. The elegant but unique engagement ring certainly reflected a new trend among the newly engaged, featuring a combination of diamonds, gemstones and even colored diamonds.
Of course, not all stars choose to have classic and traditional engagement rings designed when it comes time to make that important walk down the aisle. When Eva Longoria and Tony Parker wed in a traditional ceremony in Paris in the summer of 2007, Eva wore a white gold band that included double rows of eighty brilliant cut diamonds. Each row was separated by a row of twenty-seven square cut diamonds. To demonstrate their commitment to one another, Tony chose a ring to match that of his bride. The only difference between the two rings is that the groom’s ring was designed without the stones. Both rings feature inscriptions in French. Perhaps a reminder of where they were wed?
While you might not be able to quite afford the cost of many celebrity rings, if you have your heart on an engagement ring that looks like it cost a fortune, there are many ways to do so, including the use of pave diamond settings.
