Diamonds and Engagement-Made for Each Other Is Bigger Always Better?

untitled-66.jpgRumors have been recently swirling that a winter wedding may be in store for Jessica Simpson and boyfriend, Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo. Their relationship has been a long on again, off again one which has involved its share of break-ups and make-ups. Jessica claims that Tony is the love of her life, but they seem to have a lot of tension in their relationship that was lacking in her former relationships. If any celebrity has had a true fairytale engagement and wedding, it was the relationship between Jessica Simpson and singer Nick Lachey. The pair dated exclusively for three years. They then took a break because Nick felt that it was unfair for Jessica to marry him without first enjoying singleness and growing up independently. After the separation, the two came back together, realizing that they never wanted to be apart. Nick proposed to Jessica on a yacht. What more romantic setting could a girl ask for? He gave her a 3.5-carat pear shaped diamond ring. The two married in a beautiful wedding and showed the world their blissful married life on a reality show. The couple seemed happy and in love throughout the series. The show was canceled, not due to ratings, but because of Jessica and Nick’s wishes. This move signaled to the world that all was not right in paradise. Jessica’s father was reported to have been a constant irritant to Nick, wanting to control every aspect of the couple’s public life and finances, just as he has always done with Jessica’s. There were also allegations of an affair, but no concrete reason was given for the couple parting ways.

The ring which Nick gave Jessica was large, expensive and unique. He obviously put a great deal of thought into how he was going to propose to her, and with what kind of ring while they were on their break. His ring was a symbol of the love he had for her and for the value he placed upon their relationship.

Jessica’s relationship with Tony Romo has been difficult from the start. Jessica’s father, Joe Simpson, seems to be destroying every relationship which Jessica tries to have. With Tony, he has been itching to take over his $67.5 million NFL contract, and control Tony’s career. Jessica has been controlled by her parents since she began her singing career, with her father as her manager. Apparently, Joe feels that he can meddle in the career and finances of not only his daughter, but also anyone who she dates. Joe claims that he is doing nothing wrong, but simply doing what any manager would do for a client. Surely, not every manager would harass their client’s friends and partners into business. This point aside, Joe is forgetting what his role is apart from manager. He is a father, and his controlling and money-grabbing behavior is driving a wedge between Jessica and her serious boyfriend. No father has an excuse to do this-not for business purposes or any other reason. Although the relationship problems are caused mainly due to family struggles, Jessica and Tony are the one’s being hurt. Their situation is a rocky one with no winning solution available. Either the pair stays together and Tony must endure Joe’s relentless pestering, or they break up and are miserable without each other.

Whereas Nick’s engagement ring for Jessica was one of a kind, Tony has recently been seen shopping for engagement rings in a chain department store. With a $67 million football contract, what in the world is Tony doing looking at rings in a department store? Well, he is a football player, after all. Perhaps he’s taken one too many hits to the head, or maybe jewelry just isn’t his strong point. With all of that money, does it say something about his feelings for Jessica to be looking in such a store for this important symbol of love? In his defense, he could have been simply getting ideas, or he may have simply been shopping in the area and thought he would take a look.

Does the size and/or rarity of the ring really matter at all? Should it not be the heart that counts and the sincerity of the proposal? Or does money really equal love? There was no doubt that Nick had a great deal of love and respect for Jessica. There is a great deal of speculation, however, about the lasting quality of Jessica and Tony’s relationship. With this said, however, Nick and Jessica did end in divorce. The carat number has very little to do with Jessica’s situation. She is going to have a hard time finding someone to stay with her, regardless of ring size, as long as Joe is still pulling the strings in her life. The engagement ring size and quality has nothing to do with the problems which Jessica is facing in her relationship to Tony Romo.
