The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards held at Paramount Studios in Hollywood this year affirmed that diamonds are still the gemstone of choice for the stars. Not to be outdone, several celebrities stacked diamond bracelets, earrings and rings for a look at what is most likely to be the hottest and most dazzling diamond trends this year. Most often spotted were black and chocolate diamonds, rose cut diamonds, cuff bracelets, right hand rings and platinum settings.
Rihanna simply outdid herself in a sea of diamond jewels. Her wrists were adorned with several bracelets: a white gold bracelet beaded with diamond-encrusted balls, a tassel bracelet sporting white gold and gray diamonds, and a carved wood bracelet adorned with a cross made of brown diamonds. Her hoop earrings were made of yellow gold and white diamonds, and one of her many rings displayed a rose cut center diamond.
Pop artist Pink layered diamond and platinum bracelets, and wore platinum and black diamonds in her right hand ring and flower shape earrings. Miley Cyrus introduced Pink to the stage while wearing a stunning cuff bracelet made of 18k white gold, with nine rows of 9.23 carats’ worth of diamonds. The value of this gem was $14,675. Demi Moore followed suit by layering diamond bangle bracelets, earrings, and a right hand ring. Valued at $28,750, Ashlee Simpson had the honor of donning a yellow gold cuff bracelet with rose cut diamonds. Several starlets set the pace with plenty of stacked diamond bangles and cuff bracelets. Lauren Conrad layered several link bracelets made of white and chocolate diamonds. Other celebrities seen wearing this trend are Ashley Tisdale, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, and Solange Knowles. Platinum settings and black or chocolate diamonds were the prominent theme seen.
Perhaps the most interesting earrings seen were worn by Shannon Bex. Her stiletto-shaped earrings were made of diamonds and platinum, and featured black diamond drop details. These baubles totaled more than 20 carats, and are valued at $39,000. Male and female stars alike were seen wearing huge diamond stud earrings, either with traditional white or black diamonds set in platinum.
Right hand rings are a popular item today, and Aubrey O’Day followed suit with a whopping 57.23 carat ring valued at $59,000. This cocktail ring boasted a black center diamond with more than 600 surrounding diamonds, all nestled in a platinum setting. Celebrities following her lead included Ashley Tisdale, Britney Spears, Busta Rhymes, Paris Hilton, and Jordin Sparks, who also donned a stunning 7 carat bezeled diamond bracelet.
Christina Aguilera was a vision in black and white. Her jewelry ensemble consisted of a black and white diamond bracelet, earrings, and two matching rings. Other interesting pieces spotted on the red carpet include Katy Perry’s “love” pendant and diamond bow in her hair. Tara Conner shined in her unique starfish diamond pendant, and Ashlee Simpson joined the party wearing diamond wing-shaped earrings. The Hilton sisters are known for their prominent fashion sense, and were not afraid of going over the top! Paris Hilton sparkled in four diamond cuff bracelets, a black and white diamond ring, and matching diamond necklace. Nicole Hilton wore plenty of diamond bangles stacked with a diamond cuff, and finished the look with diamond stud earrings.
Possibly the priciest piece of the evening was worn by Wanita Woodgette of Danity Kane. Her black diamond and platinum necklace totaled more than 250 carats, and boasts a price tag of $228,000.
The men weren’t afraid to show us some “bling” too. Diamond studs were seen on Akon, Busta Rhymes, Cee-Lo, Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx, Kobe Bryant, LL Cool J, Ludacris, Ne-Yo, and Ryan Sheckler. LL Cool J, Ryan Sheckler, and Russell Brand wore a diamond necklace, diamond pendant, and diamond skull pendants respectively. Diamond-encrusted watches were seen on Busta Rhymes, Rob Dyrdek, and Ryan Sheckler’s arms. Each member of this trio, in addition to Russell Brand, donned at least one or more masculine diamond rings.
Many of this season’s trends will directly reflect many of the styles we saw at the VMA’s this year. Diamond bracelets and bangles using black and chocolate diamonds will be stacked to mimic the stars’ looks. Cuff bracelets made of colored diamonds and multiple metals create edgy and modern finishes to formal and casual looks alike. Earrings are bigger and better, with post and hoop styles donning fashionable rose cut diamonds and unique designs in platinum metals. Right hand rings and pendants will also reflect a tendency toward white metals and diamonds featuring unique color and cut. Those who can’t spring for a $10,000 or more piece of jewelry will see many silver and alternate metals used with diamonds this year as well. Cuff bracelets, earrings, and pendants will also be designed using raw diamonds, or feature a diamond centerpiece surrounded by alternate gemstones.
