Commitment ceremonies are becoming as popular as wedding ceremonies. Same sex couples are exchanging vows in commitment ceremonies and so are monogamous man-woman couples who don’t want to do anything more than share a commitment to their lives together without the bells and whistles of a marriage ceremony. After all, marriage can wreak havoc on popular Hollywood couples and it can wreak havoc with a wealthy couple’s finances too when one or both people enter into a marriage with a loaded bank account.
There are various reasons people today look the other way when marriage is mentioned. The way “family” is viewed today is much different than it was 50 or even 25 years ago. It was expected in years past for a young couple to wed, start a family and live happily ever after. In today’s world though, society has changed many a person’s view and beliefs on marriage and cohabitation. More and more these days couples are choosing to cohabitate before marriage which studies have shown to prolong the talk of proposal and even leading to longer engagement periods. Perhaps the “commitment” ceremony is one that will work better because there is less pressure to make things very permanent. Not that either part of the couple doesn’t love each other just as much as a wedded couple, but just as every snowflake is different so are people.
To some people marriage seems like an antiquated ritual and they’d rather have a ceremony that means more to them, than having a traditional wedding. Some couples even use the commitment ceremony as a stepping stone to a more traditional wedding ceremony. It’s the old adage that with so many options it can be hard to be satisfied. What many couples may find is that it’s not the actual marriage to the other person which makes the concept scary, many times it’s jitters and dealing with all the things that come with planning and having a wedding.
One similarity between commitment ceremonies and traditional wedding ceremonies is that there is likely to be some sort of exchanging of the rings. There are some very unique engagement rings to consider for all commitment ceremonies. Same sex couples like to consider matching bands or matching diamond rings. Straight couples do as well so there are very few discrepancies.
You can still be quite creative with the rings you choose for the commitment ceremony. Generally, the commitment ceremonies are planned together so choosing the rings before the ceremony should require only for the two people involved to pick out a style they like and order the rings.
If you go to some of the online jewelry stores, you can probably find unique engagement rings or wedding bands for the occasion even if you aren’t truly “engaged” to be married. Even if it’s only the two of you entering into a ceremonial commitment exchange, finding or creating rings you both wear proudly is something that you will both have to remind yourselves of each other and of your feelings for each other.
