Diamond clarity
Diamonds are rarely flawless. These flaws are also called as inclusions which are sometimes visible to the naked eye. Clarity is the measure for these inclusions ranging from heavily flawed diamonds to flawless ones. The various gradations are:
VVS1-VVS2
Very Very Slightly Included (two grades) - The inclusions are very difficult to detect under 10x magnification and still invisible to the naked eye. Hence an extremely valuable stone.
VS1-VS2
Very Slightly Included (two grades) - Minute inclusions invisible to the naked eye and seen with difficulty under 10x magnification.
SI1-SI2
Slightly Included (two grades) - Minute inclusions easily detected under 10x magnification and sometimes visible to the naked eye. These are very popular stones because the flaws lower the price but are not so visible.
I1-I2-I3
Included (three grades) - Inclusions visible under 10x magnification as well as to the naked eye. Stone may seem imperfect from various angles. These are the least expensive types because the flaws diminish the quality of the stone.
