Default It's a fugazy. What's a fugazy?

So I have always wanted to ask, is the term "fugazy" actually used in the diamond world?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's a term that I've heard only in the movie Donnie Brasco. Johnny Dep plays an undercover FBI guy infiltrating a New York mafia ring. He pretends to be a jewler and when "Lefty" (Al Pacino) comes up to him to hawk a diamond ring he got as payment, Donnie tells him:

"Forget about it. It's a fugazy"
Lefty pretends to know what that means but doesn't have a clue.

Is this something the script writers made up? The folks I know who speak limited Italian don't know the word. Is this a term that jewelers and diamond people used before the movie?

I've always wanted to know. And I feel awful for the folks at Fugazy Travel who now have their company name known as "Fake Junk Travel".
