Choosing Between Styles of Engagement Ring

When shopping for a diamond ring, it's important to know what you want and how much you can pay. First, determine what's more important to you, carat, clarity, color, or cut of of the stone. Then find a good jeweller who can provide you with legitimate certified diamonds for your ring to ensure that you are paying for what they say.

You are always advised before making a purchase that you have the basic understanding of the points to consider when buying a Diamond. The four Cs that Diamond professionals and connoisseurs the world over believe in is Cut, Color, Clarity and weight of Carat.

Diamond rings are more or less categorized by their settings and styles. The common ones are:
  1. 4 or 6 Prong Solitaire - This classic style has one main diamond suspended by the prongs above the band of the ring. The solitaire diamond ring is the most popular and traditional style of diamond jewelry.
  2. Channel Set - This style of diamond jewelry incorporates a line of diamonds that are sunken into a groove of the diamond ring so that the top of the diamonds are flush with the top-side of the diamond ring.
  3. Three Stone - This new design has one main diamond in the center and two slightly smaller diamonds of the same shape and size on the sides. The three stones of a diamond ring symbolize the past, present, and future in diamond jewelry.
  4. Bezel Set - The metal is formed to fit around the stone or a facet on the crown - the upper part of the diamond ring above the girdle. A bezel setting is usually round and looks like there is a round loop around the diamond.
  5. Cluster - A cluster ring is simply a cluster of stones that are grouped together.
  6. Invisible - An invisible setting diamond ring is usually for princes cut diamonds that are set together in rows. An invisible setting can create the illusion of a larger size diamond by combining smaller diamonds together, ie. Four small princess cut diamonds can be set together to create the look of one large stone.
  7. Pave - This distinct style creates a paved cobblestone look of a diamond ring by using many small prong settings that are right next to each other.
  8. Burnished - This style of diamond jewelry looks like the diamond was dropped into a hole on the band of the ring to fill the hole perfectly.
  9. Suspension - A relatively new setting that's growing in popularity. In this setting, a diamond is basically held in place by two sides, creating the look of the stone being "pinched" into place.
  10. Cocktail - A large oversized diamond ring typically set with a center stone larger than 2 carats accompanied by a cluster of smaller stones around it.
